EXETER LIBRARY (CLASS OF 1945 LIBRARY)

  • The Academy was very particular in knowing the land of the building thay wanted : A brick exterior to match the georgian building of th school and the interior with the ideal environment for study.

  • " The quality of a library, by inspiring a superior faculty and attracting superior students, determines the effectiveness of a school. No longer a mere depository of books and magazines, the modern library becomes a laboratory for research and experimentation, a quiet retreat for study, reading and reflection, the intelectual centre of the community. Fulfilling needs of a school expected eventually to number one thousand students, unpretentious, through in a handsome, inviting, contemporary style, such a library would affirm th regards at the academy for the work of the mind and the hands of man.

9/11 MEMORIAL AND MUSUEM

  • Ten year since 9/11 attacked on the World Trade Centre in New York, the National September 11 Memorial was opened (dedicated to the victims' families first) to the public.

  • Michael Arad of Handel Architects, with landscape architects Peter Walker.

  • Their design involved of two large square pools on the sunken city, with watre falls cascading into the center, where the depics is unclear. Victims' names from 2001 and 1993 are cut into Bronze panels along th two pools. A grove of trees will continue to be planted and grow to defines the original footprints of the two World Trade Centre buildings.

  • To honour the memory of those wise tragically lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in 2001 and 1993.

  • Rather than treating the musuem as an "lost containing exhibits" , Davis Brody Bond (DBB) has design a structure that is made up of a series of icons, which are the exhibits. As visitors embark on their journey through teh 125000 square foot, subteranean musuem, their experience is broken down into far primary components.

The journey

  • The first is entrance and orientation, visitor will pass through the Snohetta.designed Musuem Pavilion, involve large atrium provides ample amounts of natural light into depthsof the musuem while displaying two structural column rescued from the original towers. The visitors will then descent into the first, below-grade level of teh Memorial Hall, transitioning their senses from the bright and active life of the Plaza to the quieter, more contemplative environment of the musuem.

  • the procession continues through introductory exhibits positioned along a gradually sloped path. The surface is describe as a "meandering ribbon", whose gentle slope guides the visitor down " as if drawn by gravity". At key points along this route there are carefully composed views and overlooks into the spacebeyond, revealling key artifacts and historic resources.

  • The final stage of th visitor's experience is a gradual ascent by escalator from "bedrock" back to Memorial Hall, forming controlled views out to the Aluminium-clad tower volumns. Arrival in Memorial is followed by a walk back up to the Plaza, the active life life of the city.
